Jilly’s A to Z for 4/27/22 – Weight

Weight

weight that you carry

heavy brings you to your knees

lightness of being

We don’t talk about weight. We skirt around the subject. I grew up around big women with the exception of my mother who chain smoked her way into staying relatively thin. I loved these larger than life women fiercely for reasons that had zero to do with how they looked. One memory I have was just us girls going to Luby’s for a ladies lunch. I can vividly remember mom saying “A polite lady doesn’t eat all her meal”. Sometimes she’d even flick an ash from her cigarette onto the plate so as not to be tempted to take another bite. Yep once upon a time, you could smoke inside restaurants. Some even had a cigarette vending machine at the entry. Now I think WTF!

As with the rest of A to Z, music makes everything better. And not surprisingly, there are tons of songs that fit the weight/heavy theme. Decisions, decisions. Instead of going with physical weight, I’m going with the weight of the burdens we all carry. Helping each other, now that’s the stuff.

As always, more to come.

  1. I can relate to these sorts of memories. Cigarette machines and rules on how to be a lady. I like the line ‘Luby’s for a lady’s lunch. 🙂 Nice alliteration. I hardly ever smell a cigarette since they are banned from public places, and I can’t say I miss them at all. Especially the night clubs bothered me (as a non-smoker) since I loved (love) to dance and I’d come home with reeking clothes and burning eyes and my nose would be stuffy when I woke in the morning. Glad that part of those days are gone. Great song choice today. 🙂

    1. Ha! I just noticed the alliteration. I miss those ladies lunches. Same for me with smoke. I never picked up mom’s habit. The reek on clothes was the worst. I remember a few times after a Saturday night out, leaving clothes on the back porch to air them out. Bleh

  2. Wait, weight is one of my wicked ways. But The Weight is one of my favorite songs… thank you for sharing it. I know I haven’t visited as much as I would have liked and I sure hope to change that after this A2Z challenge is over. You always have interesting posts that I enjoy very much. I also appreciate your visits over at my place.

    Cheers,
    Barbie
