Jim prompts us with single word song title. Lots of good ones to choose from making picking a song hard. But fun! Means I listened to several songs before landing on “Africa” by Toto. Songwriters: David Paich and Jeff Porcaro. The video I chose was from “America’s Got Talent” when the Angel City Chorale performed. I may have posted this one before but it is way too good not to repeat. I hope you think so too.
“Africa”
I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in twelve-thirty flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say
“Hurry, boy, it’s waiting there for you”
It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what’s right
Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what’s deep inside
Frightened of this thing that I’ve become
It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
“Hurry, boy, she’s waiting there for you”
It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
I feel like I have to let my students listen to this version of “Africa” tomorrow. It is so fun, uplifting, and soothing.

I remember when this song first came out and I really loved it. At the time I was really curious about all sorts things about Africa having just tried Ethiopian food for the first time; it was great!
My favorite cover of this song is a metal version by Norwegian metal singer Leo Moracchioli.

I’ve seen them do this before, not on AGT, and it gives me chills every time. I love the song sung by Toto of course but this is so different.

I couldnāt find that original video and had to use AGT. The first time I saw this group I was mesmerized. I replayed on a loop. Tearing up as I watched. Today though I just smiled. Timing is everything.

What an awesome choice Jill. I have always liked this song, but the video that you selected made it real special. It was nice to see the audience participation making the rain sounds before they started singing.
