#SLS for 8/9/20

Today Jim prompts us with songs that have a harmonica.  Cool beans!  I immediately thought of “Takin Care of Business” by Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) but turns out that song does not have a harmonica in it.  I thought it did because my brother’s friend David learned to play the song with his harmonica.  I have a very cool memory standing in our front yard while he wailed away.

Take two took me to Google where I found so many awesome harmonica laden songs that I had a hard time choosing.  I wanted to avoid a duplicate but following my post then read philosophy, I was going to have to jump in there.  Decisions, decisions. Ha!

I finally landed on this 1979 classic “Train, Train” by Blackfoot.  Amazing how these musicians can make the harmonica sound exactly like a locomotive, chuga-chuga-choo-choo.   Awesome!!

Oh, here it comes

Well, train, train, take me on out of this town
Train, train, Lord, take me on out of this town
Well, that woman I’m in love with, Lord, she’s Memphis bound

Well, leavin’ here, I’m just a raggedy hobo
Lord, I’m leaving here, I’m just a raggedy hobo
Well, that woman I’m in love with, Lord, she’s got to go

Well, goodbye pretty mama, get yourself a money man
Goodbye, pretty mama, Lord, get yourself a money man
You take that midnight train to Memphis
Lord, leave if you can
Oh, take that midnight train to Memphis
Lord, leave if you can
Oh, take that train, baby

I almost picked “Run Around” by the Blues Travelers.  Instead I am throwing in this John Popper tutorial for good measure. Sage advice … he says watch your favorite sax or guitar player too.  Be like Jimi and don’t box yourself in – he made the guitar do things no one else could.  Now that’s genius.

As always, more to come.

  1. Love love love this song – excellent choice! I’ve used it a couple of times for some post or another. Never get tired of hearing it. Interesting ‘how to’ video, too. We have one here, but sure don’t know how to play it. haha. πŸ™‚

  2. I had that t-shirt! I went to the concert in colorado when I was stationed there, it was in a small auditorium, a high school I think, and I remember going nuts when they played Train, Train and jumping up and down on a folding chair. It’s a wonder I didn’t kill myself! Great post, two good picks!!
