#SLS for 6/21/20

I went with a classic “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Seeing this video for the first time was freaky. Sort of Frankenstein esque except Kim Basinger is hardly a monster. Without further ado, here’s the video.

She grew up in an Indiana town
Had a good-lookin’ mama who never was around
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on them Indiana nights

Well, she moved down here the age of eighteen
She blew the boys away, it was more than they’d seen
I was introduced and we both started groovin’
She said, “I dig you baby, but I got to keep movin’ on
Keep movin’ on”

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin’ in and I’m tired of this town again

Well, I don’t know, but I’ve been told
You never slow down, you never grow old
I’m tired of screwin’ up, tired of going down
Tired of myself, tired of this town

Oh, my my, oh, hell yes
Honey, put on that party dress
Buy me a drink, sing me a song
Take me as I come ’cause I can’t stay long

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin’ in and I’m tired of this town again

There’s pigeons down on Market Square
She’s standin’ in her underwear
Lookin’ down from a hotel room
The nightfall will be comin’ soon

Oh, my my, oh, hell yes.
You got to put on that party dress
It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone
I hit my last number, I walked to the road

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin’ in and I’m tired of this town again

Thanks for hosting Jim! If you like to join in, here are the Rules and Ping Back

  1. The beginning of this song may have been about an affair that Tom had with Mary Badham, the actress who was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role as Jean Louise Finch aka Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird. A week after Tom and Mary broke off their affair, she refused to see him, and reportedly said, “I don’t give a damn about you, Tom” and she slammed the door. From this Tom wrote, “There’s someone I used to see, she don’t give a damn for me.” Supposedly Mary and Tom had an on again off again relationship for 20 years until 1993.

  2. Why did I know you were going to pick this song? Frank & I were just talking about how the family of Tom Petty sent a Cease and Desist letter to the Trump campaign to stop playing his songs during his campaign rallies. With the double meaning of the song, the video portrayed seems to distract the watcher from what it really “is”. I’ve never smoked pot, but with Trump’s crap, I’m tempted to have a last dance with MJ to kill the pain! WTF? Love your song choice today, Jill! 🙂

    1. Hahaha. We gotta do what we gotta do. I did see that the family put out the cease and desist. Good for them. Especially if there was no permission.

I didn’t link to the wiki but one of the heart breakers said this song could have been about loved lost also. This line … “Well, she moved down here at the age of 18 / She blew the boys away, it was more than they’d seen / I was introduced and we both started groovin’ / She said, ‘I dig you baby but I got to keep movin’…on, keep movin’ on…”
