#SoCS for 4/20/19 ~ rib

Howdy y’all.  Time once again for the #SoCS roundup.  Grab your partner and dosey doe. Linda tells is that our Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “rib.” Use it as a word, or find a word with “rib”in it. As always, use any way you’d like. Enjoy!

Here goes nothing.  Rib.  Think, think and think.

My first thought is good ole TX BBQ.  Ribs are damn expensive and don’t really have much meat to them.  I don’t care to work for my food either.  Nawing on the bone like some kind of animal.  But we are human animals so says the Walt Disney tune.

My second thought is anatomy.  Once upon a time I wanted to be a nurse like my sweet Aunt Lavina Jo.   I was working full time in the insurance biz but I wanted more than call center.  Back then promotion was based on retirement or death so my options to advance were limited.  I took evening classes in Biology I and II and Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) to make my switch into nursing.

And I aced those courses too.  I got grades that Dr. T and Mr. Purcell said would cause me to get slashed tires.  A very competitive environment and for some odd reason I excelled.  Then came the practical application and on the first day I fainted.  All I remember is someone saying “she’s going down” then I woke up to the sting of smelling salts.

And what’s this have to do with ribs?  Well they are the bones I had to name along with all the others.  There are 206 if memory serves.  The easier part of A&P for me because this required memory but no touching.  Unless you count the skeleton that we touched as we labeled him with our flash cards.  Flash ah ah, King of the Universe.  Q was so yesterday … lol

Moving right along.  Truth be told ribs kind of gross me out.  I know they are essential for protecting vital organs like our hearts and lungs but I am squeamish.  Hat off to those fine folks – the caregivers of the world.  As much as my heart was there, my actual abilities were seriously lacking.

And that’s all she wrote.  To join in with this merry band of rib writing prompt respondents or to read their works extraordinaire, follow this path to the wonderful world of #SoCS that Linda created.

As always, more to come.

  1. I’m not a fan of the flesh or the muscles or the blood. I recall fainting in biology the day we dissected frogs — although that could have been heat or the formaldehyde smell, I don’t know. I’m definitely not the one you’d want holding a scalpel! 😆

  2. I remember my first semester in nursing school. We weeded out a good third of the class by starting out bathing and changing the briefs of bedbound patients. They quickly realized that spending the day knee deep in bodily functions was not for them! They were all grateful to figure this out the first semester, as opposed to the last.

    1. Mine was similar. It was the first realization of whether you could make it or not. I was the only one to faint that day but a few more people dropped when I did. Then a few more and so on.

  3. I get what you are saying I had a manager who we all thought was wasting her talents and education. She was a fully qualified doctor specialising in Pathology. What was she doing.. assistant store manager???? Turns out she could not cope with the sound of cracking bones! 💜

  4. I always loved biology and it was my first major until I started running into the higher mathematics. Ever since I was a kid, I used to woozie or even throw up when I got blood drawn from my arm. Now I’m okay as long as I distract myself and NEVER look at the needle. Maybe I didn’t want to find out if I could get blood from someone else’s arm.

    1. My first experience with a blood draw was at age 12. The phlebotomist was learning. Her supervisor had to take over. I was bruised terribly. I never forgot and even with better experiences I’m still nervous every time and I can’t look. I have to say the people at Quest are usually pretty good though.

      1. Ha – I just had blood work last week.I told the young woman, “let me know before you reach for the syringe, unless you want to be picking me up off the floor.” Success.
