I made it

… been a week with a clean AND organized office. In two more weeks I will have a habit and in 83 more days I will have a life style.  Or so “they” say.  Whoever “they” are :).  Shout to Shelley for a wonderful post yesterday.  Check it out here.

Any Who …

Today is turkey bingo as a fund raiser for the church.  What’s a turkey bingo you “not-from-here” types ask?  Why it is a bingo where the prizes are turkeys.  What is bingo?  I assume you knew that part first but maybe not.

Bingo is a game of chance.  Balls with numbers 1 to 75 twirl around in a hopper or thing-a-ma-jig-y.  A ball is plucked from the hopper and someone will say B 7, B 7 and if you have B 7, you dab your card or move the slider bar to cover the space.  My head hurts and it sounds like I am making stuff up!  LOL.  Let’s shorten this shall we cuz we got places to go and people to see.

Webster says BINGO is a game in which players mark off numbers on cards as the numbers are drawn randomly by a caller, the winner being the first person to mark off five numbers in a row or another required pattern.

We used to go to this annual event as a BIG crew.  Grandma S bought lunch for all of us.  All her kids and children-in-law, some of her grand-kids and even a great grand-kid or two.  After lunch we’d shop the white elephant or arts and crafts tables before playing bingo.

What is a white elephant you “not-from-here” types ask? This time directly to Webster – white elephant sale is a collection of used items being sold, much akin to a yard sale or garage sale, often as a fund-raiser for a cause.  One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.  So much for the year of less.  I think I can abstain though.  I will be strong!

This year we opted to participate as it could be the end of an era.  Not trying to sound maudlin but one never knows.  Life changes and people move away and then people pass away and new traditions are made or not as the case may be.  We’re getting while the getting is good.  I feel another where’d that expression come from but more on that later.

Wishing you all a fabulous Sunday!

As always, more to come.

  1. The original term “white elephant” was a gift of something you didn’t want but couldn’t refuse.

In Southeast Asia, white elephants were considered sacred. It had to be given only the best food, kept perfectly clean and could not be used for labor. When the king gave you a white elephant it was both a blessing and a PITA and could seriously deplete the funds of all but the richest nobility.

  2. We went to a bingo game at the local senior center (yes, we qualify for that) and I was surprised at the different configurations you could make to get a bingo! I had one and didn’t even realize it until my friendly neighbor pointed it out to me! Almost missed out on $100!
