National Poetry Month

April is national poetry month. Seems I should have known that but I have been distracted.  I wish I had realized sooner.   I have already missed a few events.

I’ve been playing around with writing some poetry of my own but my attempts are really lame.  I don’t know the difference between a Sonnet and a Nonnet.  I have only learned about acrostic in the last year and I am over using it because I understand the premise.  Finally there is the artistic and beautiful haiku 5-7-5.

Today I decided to go to the Witte Museum.  I wanted to check out Confluence and Culture300 Years of San Antonio History.  I purchased the deluxe and had the iPAD interactive experience of the Battle of the Alamo.  I immensely enjoyed the history and learned something new about my beloved city.  First city in the south to integrate lunch counters.  Also the archdiocese integrated Catholic schools in the city immediately after Brown vs. the Board of Education with no protest a full four years earlier that everywhere else.

Serendipity stepped in when I found it was also a Super Saturday.  Once a month they add some “flair” to the day and this day was poetry.  I listened to a mariachi troupe and then heard Anthony “the Poet” Flores read his punk rock poem Huevos Rancheros.

Afterwards, as I was upstairs in the gallery making my paper flowers and fiesta princess crown (Yes I did participate in the arts and crafts.  Fun for all ages!) he spoke to me.  He thanked me for attending and said I looked very familiar.  Weird because we have never met but there was an almost instant connection as if we had.  Maybe he read my mind.  I want to be him when I grow up or someone like him.  Artsy.  Soulful.

For the past six years, he has been judge of the Young Pegasus poetry competition.  I know I am not a young Pegasus but I wish I was.  Thousands of poems are submitted and the judges must whittle down to a collection that makes it into a small anthology.  I am on the hunt right now for said anthology if there is even one available for purchase.  Guess I was so starstuck I forgot to ask.

I didn’t get a lot of pics.  Here are a few:

I was alternating between enjoying the moment and capturing the scene.  Some memories will have to be of the non-photographic variety I guess.

As always, more to come.
