E is for Exercise and Excuses ~ April 5, 2018

E squared right there y’all.  I know I need to exercise more.  In particular, weight bearing exercise is what the doctor ordered for my osteopenia and osteoporosis.  You’d think I’d be scared by my diagnosis.  Scared straight into orthorexia.  Because I only do extremes.  This is no laughing matter.  I am serious J-Dub right now.  I am working on my tendencies for extremes in therapy if I even get another shot but that is a different post.

And for the record, I am scared silly.  I obsessively think about my bones … brittle and breaking as I sit in a molasses like state of do-nothing-ness.  Yet for some reason, I just cannot get motivated to walk. You see that is all I need to do.  Walk.  Exercise does not need to be full on cardio.

I mean look at Bob Harper.  I read recently that he had a heart attack in February of 2017.  WTH.  He is the epitome of health/work out gurus.  There was a family genetic component at play in his case but still.  That is scary.  When someone who looks fit is not underneath it all.  What is the true measure of health and wellness?

Any way, for today I am out of excuses (your today is April 5th.  My today is March something or other).  I will be walking in the drizzle.  And I will be singing as I do.  And then tomorrow, I will try again.  And the day after that.  And so on.  And so forth.

As always, more to come.

  1. I got my problem with no motivation to walk sorted: we got a dog 😉.
If that’s not possible I suggest the “one step at a time approach” first goal first day: get shoes on. Second day: get shoes and coat on. Third day: get shoes and coat on and open door…. I bet by then you think: ” I might as well….” 😚

  2. I can so relate to this exercise dilemma! I try to walk every day…except when I don’t. My insurance company sent me a Fitbit. We are supposed to get 10,000 steps a day. My best day so far has been 8,000. Usually, it is around 6,500…except when it isn’t. 🙂

    1. Sounds wonderful! I have two pups myself. We have 5 acres for them to run around. They do not like a proper walk since it involves harnesses. They’re free range doggies. 😆

      1. Just a big field really. We do have a few trees but definitely not woodland. No water source either other than city water. It’s semi rural but within 5 miles of town. I post the occasional picture. I should make a collage maybe.

  3. I’m right there with you. I did find a place to walk by the San Francisco Bay that is easy to get to and a pleasant, flat walking ground. I have also walked around our neighborhood for about 20 minutes. I stopped it all when I was working at Michaels thinking I was getting enough exercise. I wasn’t but now that I stopped working I think I’ll start walking again. Great way to get some thinking in!

    1. I’m always glad when I get out there. It’s the getting out there that’s hard. Another blogger suggested no fail goals. I’m trying that today.

  4. For what it’s worth, here’s the best advice I’ve heard. Set yourself the smallest possible goal – the one that is impossible to fail at. If you say to yourself, I will get up every day and walk around the block and you feel even the slightest twinge, it’s too big of a goal. Cut it back, cut it back until you simply cannot fail. If the goal ends up standing up and marching in place during television commercials, great. Do that, and do it again and again and again until you decide you want to do a bit more. This is called change, the kaizen way and there’s tons of research into why it works. I’ve written a post about it if you want more info. -https://profoundjourney.com/how-make-changes-kaizen-way/
Good luck. You can do this!

  5. I love going for walks – in the woods but sometimes neighborhoods too. If you do something like look for photo opportunities for your blog or even noticing or find topics for your blog can be a motivator for a walk (that might mean more to you than your bones)

  6. I’ve often wondered about this, as I find this is true for myself as well. Knowing better, and leaning into this-is-scary-and-I-need-to-do-something are NOT effective motivators for me. But in any case, I’m cheering you on, and letting you inspire me today. I’m headed out for a walk.
