Penultimate

pe·nul·ti·mate

pəˈnəltəmət/

adjective

1 last but one in a series of things; second to the last.”the penultimate chapter of the book”

2 synonyms:

3 next-to-last, second-to-last, second-last “the penultimate movie on my top-ten list is an animated feature”

You can’t make this stuff up. When second to last or almost last don’t work, use penultimate 😂. Or use when trying to impress the attorney with one’s verbose language skills. Not me this time. I’m just a witness.

As always more to come.

  1. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to inform/correct people who have used “penultimate” to mean the best or the top, when, as you pointed out, it’s pretty close to the opposite.
