pe·nul·ti·mate
pəˈnəltəmət/
adjective
1 last but one in a series of things; second to the last.”the penultimate chapter of the book”
2 synonyms:
3 next-to-last, second-to-last, second-last “the penultimate movie on my top-ten list is an animated feature”
You can’t make this stuff up. When second to last or almost last don’t work, use penultimate 😂. Or use when trying to impress the attorney with one’s verbose language skills. Not me this time. I’m just a witness.
As always more to come.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to inform/correct people who have used “penultimate” to mean the best or the top, when, as you pointed out, it’s pretty close to the opposite.

The person who used the word did use it appropriately. She was showing off in my opinion. 🤣
